Search Engines Are a Conduit, Not a Source

Originally published on DaveFleet.com.

Let’s get this out of the way: Search engines are a key part of communications nowadays. Take a look at your website analytics and it’ll be clear – there’s no avoiding it. Search engines usually drive a significant proportion – if not the majority – of traffic to companies’ websites.

However, I’m tired of seeing “studies” showing that “search engines” are a source of information for consumers.

Search engines are a conduit – a step along…

Search & Social 101

According to a recent ComScore report, Americans conducted more than 19.2 billion search queries throughout the month of July. To go along with that massive statistic, social networking now accounts for 1 out of every 6 minutes spent online, and according to a recent survey, 84% of people go online with the intent of socially sharing…

Is SCO the new SEO?

In oversimplified terms, SEO to the average company is a process of performing research into the words people are using when searching or discussing online. Company X then refines the copy and metadata on their site to match the vernacular people are using to improve their relevance in search result rankings. Of course this is a very simplified description. For more information click here (PDF).

Beyond Social – Spreading Your Digital Wings

eMarketer just released a study showing an 11% increase in online advertising spend – a sharp increase from 2009’s 3.4% decrease in spend. For those of you that think display advertising and search engine marketing is going away anytime soon, think again. Your Facebook News Feed is Not Only Facebook’s, but They Own the Patent to It

Implications: The big buzz around the patent includes ‘implicit actions’. For example, if your friend became a fan of XYZ Brand, this implicit action is displayed in the news feed that Facebook now owns the patent to. Could this patent affect other implicit-oriented sites like LinkedIn (xyz endorsed abc)?

Verifiable Accuracy And The Quest For Authenticity

The Dictionary program is perhaps the most useful (and overlooked) application that comes pre-installed on most Macintosh or Windows computers. For this trained scribe, the tool is more than just a way to look up words. It’s actually my muse.

As the Edelman Digital leadership team codified our positioning, I found myself turning to the Dictionary app over and over again for inspiration. Here’s a quick summary of how Oxford defines authentic:

When one dives head-first into each bullet, the second one —…
