Twitter to Launch “Business Center”

Twitter is inviting a select group of businesses to beta test its new “Business Center”. This new tool is designed to allow businesses to set up company profiles and have multiple users tweet on its behalf.  Most significantly, for the first time companies will be allowed to receive direct messages from anyone….even if the company is not following the person. With this direct access to a company, Twitter is opening a new level of customer service for brands.

Thoughts On Media Reforestation And Algorithmic Journalism

Originally posted on The Steve Rubel Stream.

Over a year ago, I published an essay on Media Reforestation. In a nutshell, it’s my belief that all tangible forms of media will be in sharp decline or extinct in just a few years. I followed that up this week with some more thoughts for the folks at WeMedia, which you can read in full or view as a PDF above.

Don’t Hesitate in Developing iPad Applications

The launch of the Apple iPad has created a “gold rush” for content developers. As with the launch of the iPhone app’s, the iPad versions are going to soon saturate the market, and anyone considering developing one should do it quickly. iPad consumers are clamoring for content, but their search is going to get harder as the choices become more robust.

Edelman Check-In Wars

When we launched Edelman Digital a month ago we added a Foursquare widget to the sidebar. Our intention was to feature a different Edelman office every month to encourage all employees (not just digital) to check-in and participate in the game to become Mayor of their office.

Technically we have no perks, privileges, or specials for our Mayors but they are included on the widget on the site. We’ve also recently created a list of all our Mayors worldwide on our @EdelmanDigital Twitter account.

This past month we had Edelman Chicago as our featured Foursquare …

Friday Five: Location-Based Social Networks

Arguably one of the most compelling pieces of the broader social networking boom has been the ability to take a relationship built online and move it offline or, at the very least, “online” to “in-person.” It’s the flipping of that paradigm that makes the latest wave of location-based social networking services so interesting. Users take their physical, offline location and put it online. While there is often a gaming aspect to this decision (users get points and badges as rewards for various levels of engagement), the broader goal is to draw attention to th…

Making The Case For Free

The future of newspapers may well be in Colorado, once home to the late “gonzo journalism” provocateur Hunter S. Thomson and today home to no less that 12 free dailies. All of these papers are very local, and perhaps more importantly, successful. This trend is even more interesting in light of tough times at the “real” state papers like the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post.

This isn’t a Colorado-only phenomenon. Palo Alto, Calif., in the heart of Silicon Valley and arguably Ground Zero in the “print is dead” movement, has two free daily newspapers. A f…

Zillow Creates Android App, Adding Bells & Whistles

A previous Quick Hits cited the slow, but steady increase in applications creating for the Android operating system. Zillow followed suit with an application that includes features not available with the iPhone version. Google Street view and voice recognition allows home seekers more tools when looking for the way a flower bed looks, to reciting the name of the neighborhood they want to search.

Foursquare Flashmob And The Badge To Prove It

Last night I attended a birthday party for Foursquare, the popular location-based social networking service that has had 2.4 million check-ins and has added 90,000 new users in the past week.

More than 100 Foursquare members gathered at Lincoln Station to sing “Happy Birthday” to the Foursquare team via Skype. Some people had RSVPed for the event on the Facebook page or on the Yelp event but I found that a majority of the people “heard” about it through Twitter and by using the trending feature on the Foursquare mobile application. This event truly was a fun F…

What SXSW Taught Me About Social Systems, And Business

Originally posted at Harvard Business Review blog

Less than a week has passed since the interactive portion of SXSW, a Mecca for the world’s digerati, wrapped up. Some have written scathing reviews vowing never to return and others provided a more balanced look. From a sociological point of view, I’d argue that events like this serve up insights by the pound, if you are willing to look for them. Here are a few things I noticed and how you can apply these insights to the business world.

Give People The Tools To Organize: Reward Participation.

Checking-In: Foursquare At SXSW Music

It’s no secret that bands and music biz folks are early social media adopters – especially in today’s shallow-pocketed music industry environment, where getting the word out cheaply is the name of the game. That’s why it’s always interesting to see what the movers and shakers at the annual SXSW Music conference are doing to promote themselves and their artists, and this year promised at least one above-the-radar partnership that I was excited to see in action.

The most buzzed-about was probably the Foursquare /SPIN Magazine integration, which allowe…
