The Fire Hose, Ideas, and 'Topology of Influence'

Ideas and the Fire Hose

Today the connected citizen is drinking from a fire hose of information which is an experience of our own making. In our eagerness to engage online we created more new data in 2009 than had been generated in history to date. But where do all these new ideas and conversations come from to create such a torrent?

Begin at the beginning

Here is my question, if conversations are markets then who starts them? Who starts the idea that starts the conversation? Who said that yell…

Tools To Measure Your Twitter Influence

I was a little reluctant to write this post because much of the Twitter community is fixated with follower count. I see many tweets, even in my own stream, of certain people announcing that they reached 500, 1,000, 5,000 Twitter followers as if it’s some sort of huge achievement like receiving a Grammy Award or something. Of course I understand that community acceptance and ego is important to all of us at times so I can see why someone would share that information. However, the misconception is that follower count somehow equates to various levels of influence on the socia…

Making Wireless Printers Fashionable And Digital

HP asked Edelman Barcelona for an Influencer Marketing campaign which had the mission to position HP wireless printers as a sexy and fashionable technology to women and families through the previously uninterested lifestyle media and blogs. We also had to present wireless printing technology in a new and exciting way considering that it had been in the market for almost two years.

So we came with the idea of creating a fashion collection made from recycled printer wires and auctioning off the collection for a charity donation. The concept was: “wire is dead, let…

Understanding Social CRM

Originally posted on Britopian from guest poster Jacob Morgan.

Social CRM is a very interesting topic but since the “space” is still relatively undefined, it can be somewhat of a challenge to address. The goal of this post is to keep things simple and high level so please keep that in mind and hopefully we can dive into more in depth in the future.

Let’s put aside terminology, jargon, and abbreviations for a moment and focus on some facts to help us understand exactly what’s going on:

The fastest growing sector for internet use is communi…

Health Digital Check-Up: How The Red Sox Taught Me About Patient Communities

There’s a very specific bond that happens among native New Englanders around our baseball team. We love our team, and from April to October, no matter where we’ve been displaced, we sometimes act like we live and die by the Boston Red Sox. Well, things haven’t exactly started off great this spring for my team; however, I still spend about three hours nearly every evening tracking games on my mobile phone, tweeting about the most recent developments, and looking to gather resources from blogs and influential fan voices.

It isn’t rare for people to treat …

Social Business Planning: Aligning Internal With External

Originally posted on Logic + Emotion.

Some small businesses start without a business plan, finding success in a breakthrough product or service early on and building upon that success organically. However, it’s inevitable that the venture will need to have a structured business plan put in place at some point if the business is expected to scale, expand and ultimately thrive. This well understood concept is the basis for what I’m informally labeling “social business planning”, yet from my experiences working across multiple organizations, the current focus remains on …

When Winning The Battle Is Just As Good As Winning The War

Originally posted on Karyo Edelman Blog.

Three weeks ago, one of our health care clients (British Columbia Association of Optometrists) found out that the provincial government was making unilateral changes to health care regulations that would adversely affect BC residents and adversely affect their practices.

When situations like this arise, clients are so angry at the injustice of it all, they want to go for the jugular, take no prisoners, pull out all the stops and go after the government with guns a blazing.

As consultants, listening to what your cl…

Not All Fans Are Created Equal

Last week, Vitrue determined that the average value of a Facebook fan is worth about $3.60 in equivalent media each year.

The firm calculated this using a wide range of clients and their 45 million aggregate fans before coming to the $3.60 annual valuation. A couple assumptions they make right up front are that each status update posted by the brand generates an average of 1 new media impression for each fan of their brand. They also assume that the brand is posting two updates per day. Lastly, they placed a value to each impression by assigning a $5 CPM which trans…

Crowdsourced Criticism And Recommendations For Social Media

Last week I asked the @EdelmanDigital Twitter followers the question below.

The @EdelmanDigital followers quickly chimed in and all the feedback they gave were points that companies should consider about their social media programs. Here are a few key responses to my question:

@eric_andersen: How to thank people for mentions and respond to replies – so simple, yet so few do

@krlooney: “When using social media I wish more companies knew what they believed.” variation: “the future they stand for”

@joachimschulz: “how”

@pcambron…
