It’s been a year since former Edelman Digital president Rick Murray introduced this property to the community announcing that “it takes a village” to not only launch—but sustain initiatives like what you see here on EdelmanDigital.com. Looking back, we hope that we’ve provided value in the form of insights and information which helps move your business forward. We’ve had well over a hundred Edelman employees contributing here and we produce unique content nearly every day. Moving forward, we’l…

Confessions of a Social Media Rookie

Have you ever been asked in an interview, “Facebook or MySpace?”  Well, I had to explain during my interview with Phil Gomes, senior vice president for Edelman Digital, my many reasons for favoring Facebook.

And that is how my journey at Edelman Digital began nearly nine months ago. For the first six months, I worked on Edelman’s Social Media Belt System.  I contacted employees from our offices across the globe and helped create the content for the different belts.  I would go home and ask myself, “Did I really talk…

Do Facebook Fans Really “Like” You?

Originally posted on Dave Fleet’s blog.

They like you, but do they really like you?

I just returned from Podcamp Montreal, where I attended several thought-provoking sessions which I’ll write about over the next little while. One of those touched on an interesting question:

If someone “likes” your company on Facebook but hasn’t tried your product, what is that worth?

Not in terms of dollars, but in broader terms.

Are they really worth anything if they just like your ad, or promotion, or even your outreach, but haven’t t…

Google Alerts for the Realtime Web

One of the more profound shifts over the last five years is the transformation of the Internet from a web of connected static pages to an avalanche of real-time communication streams. According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, every two days we fill the web with enough new data to equal all the information created between the dawn of civilization and 2003. Therefore, it’s becoming critical that communicators monitor the entire web – and do so in real-time.

The good news is that both Google and Bing (Microsoft is an Edelman client) have recently added several powerful rea…

Health Digital Check-Up: Benefits of Peer Pressure in Social Networks

The collection of people who we follow, friend and like on social networks is likely an interesting cross-section between personalities, professional contacts and friends. Depending on the networks, of course, there may even be more personal ties (say, like on Facebook), and each different channel works a little differently.

One lesson that has come out recently is that the personal ties on some of these networks can also work as a little bit of a peer pressure to those who chose to air their vices publicly as a way to use the power of the hive as motivation.

London Bloggers Meetup: PRs vs Bloggers

Originally posted on Seldom Seen Kid.

The London Bloggers Meetup took place on Wednesday, the PR edition aimed to address concerns and questions about the relationship between bloggers and PRs with a debate featuring representatives of both sides.

UPDATE: In my excitement I forgot to add Edelman sponsored the event :)

Alas, the PR vs. Blogger discussion did not turn out to be the ‘rumble in the jungle’ some had touted it as and was a rather serene affair. Indeed the six strong panel had six bloggers, three of whom are indeed PRs: Stephe…

A Look Inside oneforty with Laura Fitton

A few weeks ago I had the chance to catch up with Laura Fitton, CEO/Founder of oneforty. oneforty is a giant online marketplace for the best Twitter apps. From their handy Toolkits to the great reviews from real users, oneforty is the one-stop shop for everything you want to know about Twitter.

Suzanne Marlatt: Where does your Twitter name @pistachio come from?

Laura Fitton: Pistachio is a company name I’ve used off & on since 1997 (originally, Pistachio Studios). It came from hideous pistachio ice cream green paint I found in the basement and u…

Friday Five: Tips for Running an Effective Facebook Page

There’s been a lot of buzz recently about what it takes to run a truly effective corporate Facebook page. The Social Media Examiner highlighted the pages of a few folks doing it right. A well-managed page can make a big difference in a company’s social (and financial) bottom line so today we’ll take a look at the “why” behind the success stories.

The Golden Rule

That old playground rule never loses its application, does it? Treat others the way you like to be treated, or to use a more familiar word in this context, engaged. Think about your person…

How MBAs Will Shape the Social Media Landscape

Originally posted on Crain’s Business Blog. An article in Business Week has been spinning in my brain: “B-School all A-Twitter Over Social Media.” It’s terrific to see a new skill set being taught to business school students, adding a layer of marketing, public relations and customer service into the quantitative minds of MBA seekers. I think this is a fascinating trend. Why?  We may very well see a shift in the expected skill sets of future Social Media Directors, compared to those folks who lead social media efforts within major corporations.

What does this mean for your bus…

How to be an Effective Corporate Ambassador

Originally posted on Logic + Emotion.

An individual who aligns themselves with a larger organization and has established a reputation, let’s say in a niche is no longer representing themselves, they represent themselves, and the organization they work for. In other words, they become ambassadors for both.

Now here’s the challenge: being a visible ambassador which connects the internal with external means drawing attention to yourself—a role which has traditionally been limited to a select few, such as a CEO, or formal spokesperson. In either of these ro…
