I am a mobile device enthusiast, a proud minimalist and at times a corporate web worker. That makes me a candidate for living in ATM mode - a way of operating that I imagine many of us will be emulating in the near future.
ATM Mode is a concept coined by Ernie the Attorney, a blawger. Like thousands, Ernie lost a great deal of his belongings when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans three years ago. Since then he has moved a lot of his stuff from physical assets to bits - something Amanda Mooney talked about last week.
Now Ernie is taking this a step further by keeping a lot of his data online "in the cloud" so that he can get access to it from any connected device, much like you can get your money from any ATM without going to the bank. This has freed him up to travel with just his smartphone.
Cloud computing will get a big push as mobile devices get more sophisticated and the demographic that grew up with the Net becomes the dominant force in society. I am already there.
Today my personal data is on servers I can get access to from anywhere. My business data is also available on Edelman servers and our intranet via a VPN. If one of my devices should fail I can pick up pretty much any connected device and pick up where I left off.
How about you? Are you living in ATM mode or are you still banking at the branch or are you somewhere in between?

Almost all the way to ATM mode now. If MobileMe works as advertised, then I'll be even closer.
It's liberating.

I'm not yet, which is shameful for a tech PR consultant who enjoys using his gadgets but watch this space. I have viewed with interest over the past few weeks the commotion and customer issues surrounding MobileMe. All this said I do love the concept and think it is refreshing to see a massive brand such as Apple using its blog as a format to help solve a problem.
