Business books are funny things. Most are founded in a good idea, but then that idea gets re-told in marginally different ways an average of four times per chapter for an average of thirteen chapters per book. That said, I've "read" (okay, perused) three really good books on the changing social, marketing and communications landscapes over the past few weeks.
All Marketers are Liars, by Seth Godin.
Here Comes Everybody, by Clay Shirky
Groundswell, by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff
This brings the total number of books published on the subject since The Cluetrain Manifesto foretold our destiny in 1999 to 3,983 (or thereabouts). Let's face it, the world doesn't need any more books on social media, social marketing, social technologies and their collective impact on the communications landscape, etc.
Seriously, if you don't buy into what the authors of these books (and this blog and many more like it) are saying after reading them... if you don't buy into the need to change what you're doing and how you're doing it, and fast, my advice to you is simple: save a tree or two and don't buy any more books. You won't find better storytellers than those referenced above, and you won't find more compelling stories than those they tell.
You might however, think about that next career.

Feeling a little cynical today, Rick?
Our book Groundswell actually isn't about trying to raise people's consciousness about this stuff -- it's a manual for what to do about it, how do to it in a corporation, and how to prove ROI.
I sure HOPE it's not a waste of paper. Or my last 18 months were wasted. . .

Josh --
LOL. Cynical about business books in general, yes. I actually love what I've read of your book to date (I'll finish it up on the plane back to ORD tonight).
What I was trying to say (and what was clearly lost in the cynicism) is that these three books are all you need to read, period. The rest of us can stop writing.
My sincere apologies to you and Charlene if this didn't come across.
