The collective power and influence of the Chinese netizenry is an endless source of fascination for me. Without many avenues for collective action in offline life, Chinese often turn to digital platforms (Internet, mobile, etc.) to drive outcomes regarding everything...

Hi everyone. This is my first time on this blog and posting here is a great challenge for me. How to live up to the best bloggers in the world like Steve Rubel, Phil Gomes and Leah Jones?? So for my debut I decided to share some links and interesting things from Brazil.

It's that time of year again, when blogs, boards, aggregators and feeds fill up with wild claims of
inventions,
acquisitions,
resignations,
lawsuits, or worse (
housecleaning anyone?). But for my money,
YouTube got it right. And while I sometimes feel I was the last to learn about the internet greatness that is Rick Astley, I'm delighted to see thousands (?) of people being introduced to him for the very first time. So careful surfing today.

Bravo to
Robert French, who launched
PROpenMic — a Ning-based network for students and educators.
In just a few days, well over 130 members have signed up. It will be exciting to see this grow over time.

My new gig in Edelman Digital is Digital-Culture Evangelist. If it isn't crystal clear what I'm doing, it is an internal communications position focused on helping take every PR professional at Edelman another step forward in their digital life. It's very exciting to come to work every day and be focused on culture change.

Ah, the British press. I love it. Truly, I do.
Editors are clever. The news is never dull. And best of all, no editor ever lets a story get in the way of a great headline.
Take today's Telegraph.
The headline blares on the top of page 15: "Web in danger of collapse as video demand soars."

Great piece by Jeff Welch in Ad Age entitled
Authenticity -- Whatever That Means -- Is Our Only Hope. Here's a snippet:

I am absolutely thrilled to announce that we’ve just acquired

Although still too new among most local Chinese netizens to be considered a mainstream digital communications tool,
Twitter /
Fanfou /
Jiwai (140-character-restricted micro-blogging platforms) are becoming increasingly popular in China.

I have written in the past here that most online communities
don't have staying power. The pace of change online is incredible and someone eventually builds a better mousetrap that attracts all the mice.
Twitter is the latest darling. With its technical difficulties and the initial novelty behind it, Twitter's growth once again appears to be
on the upswing. It seems like the site could have staying power for at least a few years. But now a crack may be forming in the wall.

This weekend at the Forbes Online Brand Leadership Forum I had the opportunity to once again hear the entertaining
Jeffrey Cole speak. Cole, who heads the USC Annenberg
Center for the Digital Future, offered his view of where media is heading.

One of the units I teach within the online community immersion curriculum here at Edelman is something I call "Digital Storytelling".
While writing continues to be the standard UI of our profession, we're quite past the point when the average professional communicator — rather than a specialist or resident nerd — needs to know the basics of audio/video production.

The Randwick City Council in Sydney has replaced 78,000 old garbage bins with new RFID enabled bins, in an effort to track bin weight and recycling use among residents in the suburb. Local residents are concerned about privacy, while the...

I bet it wouldn't surprise most of the readers of this blog to learn that they were working 31 hour days. You'll all be glad to know that
the Sunday Times confirmed it this weekend.

For those of us in the US, today is the closest thing we have to an anti-holiday. April 15th marks the deadline to file our federal tax returns. Over the past couple days, I noticed an increasing trend on Twitter as friends and colleagues started wrestling with forms, calculations, and processing the government's pound of flesh.
Now, granted, my Twitter network is miniscule (and private) next to, say,
Mr. Rubel's - so my only opportunity to use Twitter as a large-scale, real-time, focus group is Tweetscan. So what does the Twitterverse think of Tax Day?
It's good for a laugh, if not entirely safe for work. That said, if I were building a web campaign for tax reform, limited government, or anything related - I might just start with Tweetscan.

He was surfing the web and he saw a picture of
Gisele Bündchen. What if people could buy what they see online? That’s how Marco Gomes created the
boo-box, a free e-commerce/advertising tool for bloggers. It is affiliated with
Amazon and
eBay, as well as local companies
Submarino,
Mercado Livre,
JáCotei and
BuscaPé.

My path to Edelman wasn't typical, not that I'm sure anyone has a typical career path anymore. My degree is in Chemistry, my jobs after college included
university housing,
study abroad administration,
non-profits in
Colorado, and my final job before Edelman was managing a small ice cream parlor.

Well, I'm not sure from whom I borrowed this or if it was originally my own idea - but in my workshops with clients and colleagues I always use the term The Baby Monitor Principle, when it comes to the culture of communications in this new age. And I like it, because it is simple, easy to get and to remember - and everyone immediately knows what I want to say.
At least everyone who has been raising kids the last 20 years...

For most, I suspect the phrase "online community" (which includes social networking) conjures up images of a certain category of web sites, such as Twitter, Facebook or MySpace (an Edelman client). However, that's changing. Community,
as Forrester's Charlene Li puts it, is like air. It is becoming ubiquitous and part of lots of sites.

The question is who is in a better position to service the largest shift in how brands communicate? Traditional Advertising or the Entertainment and Media industries. The convergence of the internet and traditional TV, social networking, blogs, vlogs, widgets &...

According to
a new report from the
European Commission, only 51 percent of Europeans use the Internet at least once a week. (HT:
Times of London)But of those that do, nearly 80 percent utilize broadband connections. For comparison, consider that
72 percent of Americans say they used the Internet "yesterday" while more than
50 percent of American households (or 69 percent of Internet users) now connect via broadband.

The Observer and
the Telegraph reported on Sunday that the UK's most famous court, the Old Bailey, has
put online 250 years worth of trial transcripts dating to 1674.
Aside from being a boon to historians and crime buffs, the move confirms that it won't be long until the world's data is all online, indexable, and searchable.
What's the status of your data?
