Our USP / point-of-difference at Edelman Digital can be summed up in two words: Authentic Communications. Frankly, getting to those two words was the easy part; delivering on that promise is anything but. That said, it is what we will strive to acheive for every client, every day. To help guide us along the way, we've crafted a set of principles, which I humbly submit to the community for comment and improvement. At Edelman Digital, we strive to create Authentic Communications that are:

My writings here on Authenticities will primarily focus on the education-related work I do at Edelman, taking a look at how social media technologies and online community principles contribute to the professional development of new and experienced comms pros alike.

Seems fitting that I'd start this on this particular week. I'm writing this in Atlanta just after the Digital Bootcamp our DC colleagues sponsored at University of Georgia this weekend. Spent most of my time talking about curriculum, careers, and technology in the educator's workshop along with Kaye Sweetser, Robert French, Karen Russell, Mihaela Vorvoreanu, and others.

Saturday's Telegraph contained an interesting interview with Nova Spivack, the founder of Radar networks. The story focuses on radar's development of Twine, a new product described as feeling like "a cross between Facebook, del.icio.us and Wikipedia." According to Spivack, Twine is powered by a "semantic understanding" of the web. Meanwhile, the Telegraph asserts that "Twine is one of several companies trying to take the lead in the fast-growing movement known as the semantic web -- or 'Web 3.0'."

We're barely into the second decade of the the Net's development. Unlike the first ten years when corporations built the web, over the next decade the Internet will largely be created by the people for the people via online communities. This means that the phrase "public relations" is (finally) taking on a literal meaning. It is our industry's charter to help clients navigate online communities and build authentic, meaningful relationships with their stakeholders. However, the challenge is if you blink, the entire vista will change...

Today's Telegraph reports that a London businessman got hit with £11,000 (about $22,000) in mobile roaming charges after his wife tried to download two episodes of Friends.

There has been plenty of debate over whether gaming can be a legitimate venue for brands to communicate. Given our relationships with brands, I can think of no better place. Think about it? Brands are ingrained in our lives in ways we do not care to admit. It is why we buy the cars we buy, travel to the places we travel to, and desire whom we desire...

I collect mentors and role models all over the place. People I've met in person, like Pinny Gniwisch of Ice.com, and people I've met only on the internet like Jen Lemen or Scott Westerfeld. I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned from these folks and others, but Scott is the person I want to talk about today.

Earlier this week, I delivered a three-hour seminar to about 75 members of our U.S. leadership about social or otherwise new media. The event took place at the Alamo Drafthouse Theater and included an excellent, provocative, and entertaining panel featuring Terry Heaton, Kaye Sweetser, Korey Coleman, and our own Tiffany Fessler.

YouTube surpassed Wikipedia as the top social media site in the UK, and Facebook rocketed from eighteenth to third, according to the latest data from Nielsen. Most interesting, however, was that traffic for nine of the top ten sites grew, in most cases dramatically, when Nielsen compared traffic numbers from January to those from the same month in 2007.

We love plans – business plans, marketing plans, PR plans, and lots of meetings to talk about the plans and the need for more planning. Plans, however, are about the possible.

Sometimes an idea or proposal can be so outrageous that no adjective is sufficient. Such is the case with this winner from Kentucky State Representative Tim Couch.

A New York Times article about a new orchestra caught my eye the other day, which is surprising. I put my oboe away for good in 1997 after spending all of junior high, high school and part of college in rehearsals and occasionally performing.

I’m off to Brussels on Thursday to attend Euroblog 2008 – a summit that Edelman is co-hosting with Euprera for 100 or so leading PR, marketing and communications academics from across Europe. Our message is simple: we need academia to embrace the need to change.

I just finished watching Shut Up And Sing. It's a documentary about all the Dixie Chicks went through after saying 15 words on a London stage on the eve of the Iraq war.

A scientist-turned-business-leader acquaintance of mine once said, "In the workplace, they call it 'collaboration'. In academia, they call it 'cheating'." Preferring an environment where the free exchange of thoughts and ideas was actually encouraged, this scientist went into industry and hasn't looked back.

So I wonder what I'm to make of the case of Chris Avenir.

From this Danwei.org post, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that China now likely has the most Internet users in the world, according to statistics from BDA, a consultancy specializing in China's telecommunications, media, and technology sectors.

Australian workers are using lunch breaks as an opportunity to keep up with gossip, goings on and breaking news via video streams on Australia's largest news media sites. So much so that lunchtime is becoming the new primetime. I presented at the Frocomm New Media & PR Summit in Sydney recently, and one of my fellow speakers was Pippa Leary from Fairfax Online (one of Australia’s largest media groups, owners of broadsheets Melbourne’s The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald, among others).

For those of us who advise and pay attention to blogger relations in the industry, this week has been a hard one. I feel like others have done a great job covering and commenting on these stories, so I wanted to take an opportunity to share how I train staff to talk to bloggers.

Another instance of nearly spontaneous community action has appeared on Twitter over the last couple of days, and the speed with which it's attracting participants is breathtaking. On Wednesday morning, Internet comedian ZeFrank posted three Twitter messages.

Over the weekend TechCrunch's Michael Arrington and Mark Cuban - a known email enthusiast - lamented about the challenges in dealing with their email overload issues. While I don't doubt they get a lot of mail, I can't feel sorry for either of them. Most bloggers and companies would love to get such valuable feedback from their stakeholders. Further, I do not believe the solution to their pains is technological; it's philosophical and social.

Since May 2007, I've been teaching week-long social media and online community immersion programs for Edelman's mid-level consultants, in addition to shorter form seminars for clients.

As various classes worked together in developing a final project, they've sometimes selected social-network-creator Ning as the platform to try out ideas.

As we know, a large part of PR essentially is all about creating press coverage in one form or another for a client via established media relationships. Measuring the value paid towards PR has always been a challenge with no guarantee of media coverage. And what about the effectiveness of coverage? For the most part this never happens in any accountable form. PR does not have to be this way.

I was very much torn by whether to blog about the new site, Miss Bimbo, that got so much attention in the UK media over the holiday weekend and from several social media watchers yesterday. After all, it's attention that the creators crave, not to mention the search engine benefit from lots of inbound links, even condemnations. But add my condemnation to the pile anyway.
