The New Me

Earlier today, we announced that Michael Slaby was joining Edelman as the new head of our global digital practice. He actually started on Tuesday, but he and I, along with more than 100 of our colleagues from Edelman’s global leadership team have been locked in a hotel conference room since then talking about the fiscal year that was (ours ends on June 30), and our plans for the year ahead. We snuck out to make the video above. Needless to say, we’re thrilled that he’s joined the firm; Mike’s inheriting an amazing leadership…

Blame Richard

My five plus year (and growing!) fascination with the impact of social technologies on the public relations business started here on September 29, 2004, when our CEO, Richard Edelman first posted to his blog, 6am. Truth be told, we’d been experimenting with early-versions of what is now widely referred to as Influencer Marketing prior to that, and that work led us to become governing members of WOMMA. But Richard’s blog was an accelerant for…

Social Media: Not So Frivolous After All

I had a front row seat to the story below, as the author Ted Nation and his wife Susie are longtime friends. Like all those in their extended social networks, I woke to the horror of the Chilean earthquake on the morning of Saturday, February 27. Being the nerd I am, I booted up the laptop, logged into Facebook and saw this status update from Susie:

“Big Earthquake in Chile and Sarah’s on a bus right near the epicenter”

Their daughter Sarah was in Chile, and they were living every parent’s worst nightmare: not knowing if their child was safe… or even…

Brackets With Benefits

Dan Morrison is on a mission to change the world. More accurately, he’s on a mission to get others to help him change the world. He started Citizen Effect last fall to give everyday people the tools and networks they need to work directly with, and make a difference in communities around the world. He calls those who engage citizen philanthropists. We’ve taken on four projects at Edelman, and if you you follow me on Twitter, you’ll know that I’m an active…

Passion: The Renewable Energy

Yesterday, David Armano asked us all why we make the annual pilgrimage to Austin for #SXSW.

No doubt, he’ll get a wide range of responses from “the parties,” to “networking,” to “get me the hell out of winter.”

This is only my second South by, but I can’t see missing another one anytime soon. And here’s why:

- The vibe is amazing. Austin sets the tone. Yes, it’s weird, and that’s a GREAT thing.

-…

It Takes A Village

“At last.”

I remember BBDO’s Phil Dusenberry addressing an international meeting of Pepsi-Cola marketers and telling us all that those were the two most overused and least motivating words in advertising. Some twenty years later, I can tell you that they mean a lot to me; this site was almost as long in the making (not quite, but it feels that way). It’s the classic cobbler’s kids story: clients take precedence over “house” work…

Rethink How, Not Just Where You Spend Your Money

For the past five years, anyone in the communications business has been busy trying to identify and connect with the 10% of their stakeholders that my friend Ed Keller and his co-author, Jon Berry call the influentials. Their arguments make sense: If you engage those who do the influencing, it stands to reason that others will be influenced by what they have to say. Or does it?

Fast forward to last September. We held a roundtable with a number of staff and industry notables, and it was there that I was introduced to the…
