Instagram Launches “Photos of You”

Instagram today announced its “Photos of You” update. When users upload a photo to Instagram, they can now “add” people to that photo. When Instagrammers add another user to a photo, that user receives a notification and the photo will appear in the Photo of You section – very similar to Facebook’s photo tag functionality. Instagram will be adding the “Photos of You” section to every Instagram profile by May 16. With the rollout of “Photos of You”, brands have a new and exciting opportunity to curate and share photos related to their business – through the …

Instagram’s New Privacy Policy & Terms of Service

Instagram shared a major update to their privacy policy and terms of service on Monday. This comes shortly after the finalization of Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram. The most notable change is that Instagram is now allowing companies to pay to use Instagram photos – including name and information like tags and location – for advertising within Instagram. Promotional details and advertising options haven’t been disclosed, but the update reads:

“To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to …

Instagram Launches Web Profiles

On Monday, November 5, 2012, Instagram launched their Web Profiles functionality to be rolled out for all users over the next week. This is an important update, given Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram in April. In addition, the Web Profiles functionality launches after a huge peak in Instagram use during Hurrican Sandy. There were 800,000 Instagram photos tagged with the #Sandy hashtag and over 1.3 million photos documenting the hurricane on the East Coast last week. More and more people are using Instagram as a tool to share photos of their own life – but search for photo…

Friday Five: How Fashion (and other) Brands Can Leverage Instagram

Mobile photography apps like Instagram allow brands to tell their story and connect with their current and aspirational audience in a completely new and visual way. Fashion brands have paved the way for other brands testing out the mobile platform; brands like Gucci, Levi’s and Burberry were some of the early adopters on Instagram. Whether it’s giving their audiences an inside peek at events and upcoming products or tying their Instagram presence to a larger marketing campaigns, fashion brands are proving how valuable Instagram is as a storytelling service.

Tell Your Brand’s Story with Instagram: Tips and Best Practices

What’s the best way to tell your brand’s story?

Do you remember your favorite book as a child? I was always drawn to picture books, because they allowed me to see an image and then construct a story from the photos on the page. Fast forward twenty-some years and I’m still drawn to “photo stories.” While I don’t flip through picture books like I did when I was younger, I’m constantly reading and viewing other people’s “story” within the social space.

There are hundreds of platforms and mobile applications for brands to use today from Facebook and T…

Friday Five: Using Social and Mobile for Good

We live in a digital world. So much of our everyday lives revolve around the social space, whether for work, play, or both. Many of our jobs revolve around Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and other social networks. When we aren’t working, we’re blogging or we are glued to our mobile phones texting or using apps like Instagram and Path.

While being glued to our gadget of choice may be second nature to many of us, how often do we think about using our social and mobile presence for good? I don’t mean “good” in the Slacktivism sense, where we do things just to “feel good…

Instagram: The Full Picture

I’ve mentioned previously in a Friday Five article that I’m a wannabe photographer. Thanks to mobile photo apps, like Instagram, I am able to shoot, edit and share images like never before. I’m able to take photos and within seconds, apply a fun filter and share with my social network. With a few clicks and taps on my smartphone, that photo of what I ate for dinner or the outfit I wore to work is sent to my Facebook friends and Twitter followers. The best part of all? Everyday moments look a whole lot more exciting with those impressive filters!

While Instagram is a fun…

Smart Gift Giving Applications to the Rescue

While I’d like to classify myself as an organized holiday shopper, the opposite is true. We have less than one week until Christmas and I still need to find presents for several people on my list. No need to fear; the internet is here to help. With a quick click of a button (or by simply logging into Facebook) I can find the perfect gift for everyone left on my list.

“Smart” gift-giving applications work like a gift-idea version of Pandora.com, recommending specific gifts your friends might enjoy. With a plane home to catch and the holidays inching closer, I don’t hav…

Friday Five: Considerations to Successfully Connect with Holiday Shoppers

As a self-proclaimed shopaholic, mid-November is my time to shine. It’s the kickoff of holiday shopping! Brands targeting holiday shoppers are well aware that ignoring key shopping days is detrimental to business. Two promotional periods in the US are obvious: Black Friday (Friday, November 25) and Cyber Monday (Monday, November 28). During the 24-hour period of Cyber Monday 2010, consumers spent more than $1 BILLION shopping online; a 16 percent increase from 2009. It’s important for brands to take advantage of these key shopping dates and times in order to connect with the…

Friday Five: Ways for Brands to Best Utilize Mobile Photo

I’m a wannabe photographer. Seriously, I used to bring my point-and-shoot camera in my bag every day just in case I found something fun or interesting to document. Lately, my purse has been feeling a little lighter. Enter Instagram and other mobile photo apps, enabling me to shoot, edit and share photos directly from my mobile. They also allow casual shooters like me to edit or enhance an image. (Instagram, for example, offers fifteen different filters with names like “Hefe,” “Toaster” and my personal favorite, “X-Pro II.”)

While I enjoy Instagram for personal u…
